MEDICAL TEAM

Packed with a busload of supplies, the medical team travelled 14 hours to reach their first destination in Ampara. Ampara was the hardest hit province in Sri Lanka with over 10,000 deaths immdiately following the tsunami. Headquartered out of the boy's orphanage in Thirukkovil, the team split into two with some of the medical staff going further north with Sri Lankan physicians and the rest of the team staying in Ampara. Both groups worked from early morning till late night attending to the medical needs of well over 1,000 patients living in refugee camps. Many of the patients had little, if any, contact with medical personnel since the tsunami a month prior. The medical team hit the road bright and early to serve in several refugee camps. In four days, the teams worked in over 7 camps and centers.

Preparation

The medical teams spent three weeks preparing for the trip and readying all supplies to fit into 30 large suitcases. Below are some of the pictures of the preparation before embarking on the trip.

Thirukkovil - First Team

Upon arrival in Ampara, the medical team split into two to serve at more locations. The first team went to a refugee camp in Thirukkovil, not far from the orphanage.

Kalmunai - Second Team

The second team traveled north with a South African group of medical personnel to the town of Kalmunai to work in a community center.

This is the second of two camps the first medical team worked in.

Colombo

The teams joined and returned to Colombo. After a 12 hour ride through Sri Lanka's heartland, they worked from morning to night in a center servicing hundreds of families.

Partnering with Community Concerns Society, the teams finished out their time in Colombo working with the very dedicated and tireless Sri Lankan teams who guided us through the country.
